Much Ado About Nothing

{January 30, 2009}   I don’t need a man…?

I’ve mentioned before that I’m on holidays this week, right?
Now, I can’t diss holidays, I love not having anything to do and not having to get up in the morning, it’s good stuff!
But I hate the fact that Andrew goes home during the holidays.

I miss him like crazy.

I’m not normally like this. Usually I can take or leave a boyfriend. I’m not one of those girls who needs to have a guy on the go in order to feel like she’s a real person.
Don’t get me wrong, I like having a guy around, but I don’t need one.

Oddly enough, this time it’s different. I miss Andrew when he’s not around, even though I can text him and call him every day, and I know he’ll be back on Saturday.

Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever had it this bad before. It’s starting to worry me. Am I turning girly??

So last night was Justice Carney’s inaugural professorial lecture in NUI Maynooth. (Woo, spiffy!)
And as I mentioned earlier I was asked to introduce him.
It was good old fun, really.
Fitz and Sunner did the coats, Peter was an usher for the night.

I swear, though, people are gonna think there are only four law students or so in the entire college.
And I’m definitely the only girl law student!
After all, I’m class rep, secretary and a founding member of the law society, I introduced Carney last night and on Open Day there was a video of me talking about the course playing at the Law stand.
The other three guys there last night were the President, Liaison Officer and PRO of the Law Soc (also all founding members) and Liam was the other person with a video on Open Day.

Actually, there are 47 of us on the course. But the rest of them don’t seem to do anything, really.

So I had to like, dress fancy for last night’s thing! That’s a big deal for me, I hate dressing up. =(
I wore my new coat!
Which I don’t think I’ve mentioned before…
I bought a new coat a few weeks ago, when I went dress shopping for my brother’s wedding.
It’s really spiffy, and cream, but I’m a very messy person, so it’s reserved for special occasions.
That is to say, it hasn’t left the wardrobe since I bought it.
But I pulled it out yesterday, in honour of the occasion.
Plus my purple coat totally *clashed*.
Yup!
This is a pointless, rambling entry, I think I’ll just stop typing now…

{January 27, 2009}   My printer hates me.

I don’t like working Sundays, because the stockcards come through at work.
This means they all have to be printed, stapled and then filed.
It’s several hundred sheets of paper, I think something around a thousand.

The printer at work? It hates me.
Every six or seven sheets, it gives this horrifically loud bleep, and decides it’s stuck.
By the end of the shift, I had the routine down pat.
Take off front door, remove toner cartridge, pull out blank sheet of paper, pull out half printed sheet (burning your hand in the process), replace toner cartridge, replace front door, hit go button.

(Then kick the printer because it’s a piece of shit.)

Anyways, this happened six or seven times, then the computer decided to realise the printer was broken. (That’s bad, because it won’t let me do anything then.)

So even though the printer was fine, and the computer was fine, I had to ring up Head Office and get them to tell the computer that the printer was fine, and to stop having a hissy fit.

Anyways, eventually I got it done. They all printed, but not without complaint.
I don’t like that stupid stapler either, don’t get me started on it!

In fact, technology hates me. =(
Probably now my laptop’s gonna turn around and die or something. Lovely.

{January 25, 2009}   Tweet-up!

So last night was the tweet-up mentioned in an earlier post!
‘Twas a good night, undoubtedly, although it could have started better!

*Someone* (*coughAlancough*) forgot that Saturday bus times are different to weekday times, so there was a slight mix-up in transport into Town.
But I got there eventually!

Why do buses travel in convoy? I mean, a 66a and two 66s within twenty metres of each other is ridiculous, considering if you miss them you have to wait an hour for the next one!
*Rolls eyes* Public transport.

Anyways, dinner was a five person affair, in Luigi Malone’s and it was, to be honest, a little disappointing. The service was good, I’m not denying that, but it was a bit rich kicking us out at 8.15! That’s certainly not a place I’ll be going back to, I like to have enough time to actually enjoy my meal.

After that, we (at this point it was myself, Alan, Steven, Chris and Michael) went to the Duke.

We were joined there by a ton of people, too many to mention, I think.
Things kicked off epically though, with the arrival of Rick’s stamps.
I get the feeling many things around RTE will be stamped as “win” or “fail” and people will be extremely confused. =D
Interestingly enough, the fail stamp actually did fail, as it smudged within minutes. Disappointing.

Alan was hilarious all night, refusing to go to the bar for fear of getting kicked out.
He’s so young and cute!

An epic night, I’d say, and a wonderful introduction, for me, to the world of tweet-ups!
Ah, if only I didn’t have to get the last train home! How ’bout having the next tweet-up in Leixlip?

Edit: Forgot to mention, some pics from the night here

{January 24, 2009}   Oodles and oodles of noodles.

^ That video’s been stuck in my head for days.

Went to town today, since it was the first day of the inter-semester break for most of us! (Not Aaron, lucky sod, he’s been finished for a week already.)
Anyways, we headed into town to do some shopping, a whole gang of us.
We started off as 12 people, then shrank to 11 when Peter went to meet his girlfriend, and we lost Karla and David at some point, I’m not sure when…

Anyways, keeping track of that many people is hard, and it’s also hard to get everything you want, if you have to keep the interests of the group in mind!

Had a good time though, ’cause I got to spend time with people outside of college, which I don’t often get to do.
Stupid job really screws up your social life, but it’s a necessary evil!

Uhhh, anyways, because all the lads are anime/manga/gaming/comic book nerds, most of the shops we visited today were quite small. Therefore it made sense for some of us to wait outside, rather than all wander around the shop and not be able to see anything or really move.

One woman got really mad at us for waiting outside, and chastised us for “clogging up the pavement”.
I wouldn’t mind, like, but we were in Temple Bar, it’s not like there were a lot of cars around!

Still, had a good time, bought some books and a new set of multi-coloured shoelaces, yay.
Gavin bought GH World Tour, so we played that once we got back to ‘Nooth.
It’s good fun, but my hands are too small to reach all the buttons on the guitar comfortably, I can’t play for long periods of time. =(

Other than that, I don’t really think I have much else to say!
Everyone’s going home within the next few days, because we’re off college for the entirety of next week (*yay*) but that means most of my friends won’t be around (*boo*).

Oh! Butler’s Chocolate Café Hot Chocolate?
Divinity in a cup. =)

OH! Also!!
If you have Twitter and haven’t already done so, vote for @mcawilliams in the shortyawards! Only a few hours left, click this then hit submit!!

{January 21, 2009}   Mr Justice Paul Carney.

So, I’m a Maynooth Law student, right? I study Law, Irish and French, and I’m part of the first Law class in the college.
I’m also secretary and one of the founding members of the Law Society in Maynooth (thanks to Blacknight Solutions for the domain!!)
As well as that I’m one of two class representatives. That means I meet with the Law department once a semester to raise any issues the law class has, and if they have an issue some other time during the year, I’m supposed to be the one they bring it to.

Anyways. The Law Department (It’s actually part of the Dept. of Business and Law, but who cares about Business really?) has two and a half lecturers.
We have two full-time lecturers, Dr. Sibo Banda and Dr. Neil Maddox.
But we also have an adjunct lecturer.

And that adjunct lecturer is Mr. Justice Paul Carney.
He’s the presiding judge of the Central Criminal Court.
Wooh, fancy.

Apart from that, I don’t really know anything about the guy.
So I’m gonna have to do some research before I end up introducing him before his first talk in Maynooth next Tuesday.

Dr. Maddox rang me yesterday to ask would I volunteer to help at an event the Law Dept. was running next Tuesday, and I said sure.
((See, this is why I’m so busy all the time. I’m not capable of saying no to people when they ask me to do stuff. It’s also why I was secretary AND treasurer of the student council at school, editor of the school magazine, ambassador at every open night, on the committee of the Lucan Concert Band, member of GOD KNOWS HOW MANY clubs and societies in college… DAMN my willingness to please!))
I didn’t realise I was setting myself up to speak in front of a bunch of judges and stuff at the first talk Carney’s ever given in ‘Nooth!

Help!!

{January 20, 2009}   On Exams and Such…

I’m exceptionally lucky in many ways, but especially in the fact that I excel academically with very little work.
I’m that person who spends their time on Twitter when they should be studying, yet still manages to get an A or a B in the class test.
Take my Leaving Cert., for example. Any of my friends or family will tell you that I did not work. Hell, even Twitter would probably tell you, from the amount of time I spent on it!!
Yet I still managed to get excellent results, my first choice course and an entrance scholarship to Maynooth to boot!

Exams agree with me. I have excellent retention and my memory for facts is quite good.
EG. Giraffes:
They have black tongues.
Seven vertebrae in their neck, same as humans.
No two giraffes have the same pattern of spots.
Giraffes legs are the same length as their necks.
Newborn giraffes are taller than the average fully grown human.
Giraffes give birth standing up, and it scares the crap out of zookeepers the world over!

Anyways, that’s enough about giraffes.
You know what really annoys me?
Finishing a long exam in a very short space of time. Namely today’s French grammar exam.

I finished the 90 minute exam in just under 25 minutes, and that scares the crap out of me! I’m left wondering did I leave something out, or did I skip a page, should I have written more or was there an instruction I missed…

Sitting in the exam hall for a further hour worrying about what I did wrong is not good for my stress levels.

Oh dear. =(

They give you access to student discounts, allow you to get in and out of the library, act as a form of ID so you don’t need an age card or a passport on you the whole time…
Student cards have many uses!

So it’s really not a good idea to snap yours.
Unfortunately, that’s what I did to mine today.
We left the library to go get some lunch, and I put my card in my pocket after I swiped out. Unfortunately, I didn’t think about it being in my pocket when I went to sit down to eat lunch in Pugin. Poor student card suffered a traumatic break.

Oddly enough, it still swiped in the library gates! I’m not saying that wasn’t helpful though, ’cause I had left my laptop and my clarinet in the library.

Anyways, I got a new one, and it’s identical to the old one, bar the crack in the middle.

Now I have two IDs! YAY!
Card after its traumatic encounter with jeans...
Poor card, we hardly knew ye…

{January 19, 2009}   Tweet-up!

We (the twitterati in the Dublin area) are having a tweet-up!
Called by Alan, who seems to organise everything these days, it’s gonna be next Saturday (24th) in the evening, it’s a dinner thing. Probably somewhere like Luigi Malone’s, I’ll update that as we decide further details.

Confirmed, it’s gonna be in Luigi Malone’s

Spread the word! Let us get together and whip out iPhones and tweet about how @benkenealy is balder in real life than on twitter, and that @amylong’s hair could be blonde or red, no-one really knows!

Let us tweet!

{January 18, 2009}   Having a job kind of sucks.

You might know that I work in Dunnes Stores part time, to fund myself through college. Most of the time I don’t really mind it, because the people are nice and, well, I really do like having money. It’s quite helpful, I gotta say!

I work in EPOS, Electronic Point of Sales, which means I have the thrilling job of printing SELs (Shelf Edge Labels) all day long. I have to say it’s not exactly the most scintillating of occupations.

Plus, the uniform *sucks*.

Anyways, the point of this post was that, due to having to work yesterday, I missed TeenCampIreland (http://teencampireland.com). Considering my best friend set it up, I was gutted to miss it.
But, unfortunately it was a choice between going to TeenCampIreland and going to my brother’s wedding. I know which I’d rather attend, but my parents didn’t agreee (!)

Having a job means I miss out on nights out at college, on infinite clubs and socs things, it means I can’t plan more than two weeks in advance, unless I’m given at least four weeks so I can ask for the day off, and I can’t wander off at the drop of a hat. I’ve also missed the last six orchestra rehearsals which, considering I’m the wind tutor, isn’t really all that respectable!

Now I know that everyone has a job and everyone has commitments, but having a job AND going to college full-time (or studying for exams like I am at the moment) means I don’t really have that much free time.

Here’s hoping I’m off the day of Twestival anyways!
