Much Ado About Nothing

{May 31, 2009}   Teeth

Aoife’s boyfriend Shane’s dad works in a Braun factory, so one day three or four months ago Shane walked into our house with a tray of toothbrushes in his hand, because his dad gets them for free.
Anyways, these toothbrushes have been sitting in the ensuite for a good while now. I robbed a green one a while back and left it in Andrew’s house, because I hate the feeling of having unwashed teeth. I brush my teeth periodically.

Anyways, last week, when I was bored one day, I decided I’d change my toothbrush at home, since I’d had mine for about a year and it was looking rather worn out.
I chucked it and picked a brand spanking new one from the ensuite, which was navy, since there were already green and pink in the toothbrush holder.

Then today, when I was brushing my teeth before I went to bed, I was half done when I looked at the holder and realised the blue one was still sitting in the glass and I had picked up the green one by reflex.

Eh, whoever owns that toothbrush, I’m sorry!

{May 30, 2009}   Nightwatch

I love books. I used to be a voracious reader, I’d read at least four or five books a week, more if I was particularly free or just in the mood to read.
Over the last couple of years my appetite for reading has declined, and my concentration span has disappeared.
I haven’t read a book that was more than, like, 300 pages in months.
Well, I read Inkdeath, but that took me over a month, which is a horrendous amount of time.

The other day, when I was in Kingsbry and the lads were LANing, I got bored and picked up one of Mark’s books, The Night Watch, by Sergei Lukyanenko.
I have to say, it was excellent. I got really engrossed in the story, and there were enough twists to keep me guessing until the end.
Although, when I’m reading I don’t tend to try guess the next plot point, I just see where the book takes me. So I guess there were enough twists to keep me entertained.

Will have to rob the Day Watch and the Twilight Watch before the lads all move home.

Oh, one thing that really annoyed me, though, were the minor spelling and grammar errors. I know it was translated from Russian, but things like mixing up accept and except? That’s just a lazy proof-reader!

{May 29, 2009}   Links

I don’t mean links in the sense of clickable links online.
I mean between people.
They say it’s a small world, but isn’t it odd how things which you would never have put together can be linked in some way?
I know Maynooth is a small college, but when you look at the way things are intertwined, it’s always funny.
For example, if I wasn’t going out with Andrew, I might not know Dave – they’re both on the archery committee, and I probably wouldn’t have ended up going to archery. But I know Clair, who plays in the same orchestra as me, and her boyfriend Niall is in the same class as both Dave and Andrew and would have several mutual friends.
The other day, I went for lunch with Lenny, who lives with Andrew, and Karl, who’s in the same class as well.
Karl turned around and asked why Lenny was going for lunch with his housemate’s girlfriend, but then I pointed out that I had known Karl before I knew Andrew, as we had adjacent stands on Fairs Day, way back in the beginning of October.

In November, when I went to Dominicon, I met Amy, who is on the Game Soc committee, I think. Her boyfriend Matt is also in Andrew’s class and used to live with them, for a few weeks.
Matt is very good friends with Dave, who only recently started going out with Cheryl.
But when Cheryl has a problem, she confides in Matt, who then sometimes will pass a nugget of information on to Dave.
If I have a problem, I’d tend to go to Dave, and if Andrew thinks I’m mad at him, he’ll go to Dave, who was his friend first, but who I’m much closer to, and he’ll ask Dave if I’m okay.

Then if you imagine again if I’d never met Andrew, I might not know Mark, who is another of Andrew’s housemates. But then Ciarán, who is in my law class, is friends with Aaron, who’s friends with Anto and Éanna, who are both friends with Mark, so I probably would know him.

Then look at the fact that I’m going to a barbecue tonight – this barbecue is in Andrew’s friend David Dunne’s house, but he also lives with a guy called Anto, who isn’t the same Anto that I mentioned in the previous paragraph, but this Anto is friends with Aoife, which means my sister will be there tonight.

So many links, everything’s so complicated. Everybody knows bloody everybody in Maynooth, it makes no difference what you do, you can’t escape it.

{May 28, 2009}   Broke

I dropped my phone and my poo broke. =(
This means I broke my poo!
I am very sad. =(

Eh, but I think I should explain.
On my birthday, Dave gave me life force, poo and tears.

For the last three years, no matter what kind of phone I’d had, I had a charm on the end of it. It was originally a Boyne Valley Honey Trust charm, but when the string on that broke, I had none for a week or so. On my birthday, Dave gave me a new charm for my phone – lucky chinese poo on a red string!

It hasn’t fared too well of late, the string is fraying and it was only a day or two away from breaking.
But at lunch today my clumsiness got the better of me. I dropped my phone and that was the end of my little porcelain poo. =(

Naturally I twittered this, I felt the need to share my devastation with the world. And I must say I got some interesting reactions, here, here, here and more. This is why twitter rocks. =)

{May 27, 2009}   Phone

My phone battery died today, while I was watching football. I wasn’t really surprised, though, because I’d been using it quite heavily.
Well, what do you expect, I was watching soccer, like.
Anyways, it got me thinking.
What did our parents do? I use my phone for everything. I take notes on it, mark in appointments, I’m constantly texting, I call people if I want to find out where they are when I’m in college…
How did they cope?

{May 26, 2009}   Supertired

Today was a looooooong day.
Nearly all my friends are finished now, with the conclusion of the law exams. Of the people I talk to regularly, there’s only me, Dave, Lenny and Vicky to go. Why do exams stretch out for so long?
I got up at, like, ten today, ’cause I was extremely lazy. Wandered into college and did some study for my French exam (shock! Horror! Newsflash! Aislinn did some study!!)
Turns out, the exam I had today wasn’t the one I was studying for. I’m such a fool. It’s crazy how many times I looked at that stupid exam timetable and yet I never realised which order the French exams were in.
Anyways, it was grammar today, and since the second exam is in English, I had barely revised at all.
At least I’m super-prepared for Thursday’s exam.
Contract law was, eh, long. I almost fell asleep before the end of it. I’m just so goddamned tired at the moment.
It’s promotion changeover day tomorrow, which meant all the POS had to come down today.
A couple of weeks ago (or was it last week? My time perception is all messed up) I posted about turning off the music and the lights at work. (here)
I’ve learned by now, though, that it depends on who’s on security whether you get music or not.
Let me tell you, though, since Stephen was on today, there was no music, and it’s hella boring pulling slips of card out of plastic holders for an hour without even some music to distract you.

Now it’s quarter to eleven and I’ve done two exams and a shift at work today. I’m tired and I’m going to sleep, and I probably won’t wake up for a few days.

{May 26, 2009}   Demon

There’s a dog lives somewhere in my estate.
Well, actually there are many dogs live in my estate, but I’m only talking about one particular dog. Most dogs in the estate wouldn’t be allowed wander around without a lead or someone taking it for a walk. Charlie was, but he was old and really well behaved, plus he was tiny. And evil, I didn’t like him at all. Grr.

But, eh, no, I’m talking about a different dog. This dog is called Smokey, I think, it’s a small fluffy thing. Looks like some sort of spaniel. It’s quite adorable to look at, small and cute and fluffy, big plume of a tail, makes you want to wander over and pet it.
NO.
It’s a DEMON dog!

The first time I saw it, it sprinted over to me and tried to eat me!
I was eh, perturbed, we’ll say, because even though it’s small it’s got the helluva lotta teeth.
I forgot about it within a few minutes, though, because I was only seconds away from my house.
It was only a few weeks later, when Aoife went to give a maths grind to a girl who lives down the road and came sprinting back into the house that I remembered the demon dog.
Aoife got Shane to walk her to Jenny’s house, so as to protect her from Demon Dog.
I should mention that Aoife was walking the length of, eh, four houses.

Sinéad has had run-ins with demon dog as well.
It’s full of teeth and barking and terrifying-ness!
Normally I don’t mind dogs, but this one is evil.
It’s demonic, I tell you!

Destroyer of worlds

Destroyer of worlds

{May 25, 2009}   Tired

This exam thing is starting to get me down.
I did my first exam on Tuesday, May 5th. But that was an oral, so we’ll discount that and the other oral, which was the following Monday.
So my first formal exam was on the 15th May, at half nine. It was the first exam of the exam period, so I was happy enough to be starting straight away. I’m not very motivated, so it’s better for me to plunge straight in and be kept going.
So there I was, one (or three) exams in and raring to go. I was kept busy with two more exams the next week, but now it’s three weeks since I did my first exam (or a week and a half if we’re only counting written exams) and I am bored as fuck. A whole load of my friends are finished and more of them will finish tomorrow. As things stand, I’m only half way through. I’ve hit a wall.
I don’t study anyways, ’cause I’m a lazy SOB, but I’ve just gotten completely out of it by now.
Tomorrow I have two exams, French literature and Contract Law and, to be honest, I don’t think I could care any less about either of them. I’m just sick of this exam thing. I’m tempted to go to sleep now in a minute and not wake up for another three days.
Better set my alarm tonight or I’ll be in serious trouble tomorrow.
Gah!

{May 25, 2009}   Thanks

It’s a tiny word, thanks. Comes in many forms, many different meanings, from the sincere and formal “thank you very much” to a quick “ta” or “cheers”.
It’s not hard to say, doesn’t take long at all, and it’s almost always appreciated.
As B’dum said a few days ago, if you do something for someone, the least you can get is a thanks.
At work, when some customer comes looking for something and you take them to where it is, even if it’s something they should be able to find themselves, a thanks never goes astray.
It’s not a big deal, takes less than a second to say and it’s always appreciated, trust me.
When you’re stuck for hours doing a boring job, a little bit of human decency always cheers me up, anyways!

{May 24, 2009}   Africa

Africa Day @ Iveagh Gardens was on today.
After spending the entire morning in bed, myself and my mother ventured into town to see what the craic was about Africa Day.
Sun shining, bright colours to be seen everywhere and pale, bare flesh exposed to the sunlight which has been scarce in the past few weeks!
I knew it was gonna be a good day, but I hadn’t realised quite how popular it was. Somewhere in the region of ten thousand people were there. We queued for half an hour along Harcourt Street before finally being allowed into the Gardens and it was a far cry from the last time I was there, with the guys from Scratch, I’ll tell you that much anyways!

Stalls galore, from every African Country you could name and many more that you couldn’t, drumming workshops, food, culture, music, dancing, extreme trampoline, it was all there.
As we walked in, Paddy Casey was playing on the main stage, one of many acts there today, including Frances Black, Republic of Loose, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Tíla & more.
The main reason I went was because my dad works in Irish Aid, who organised the whole craic today, but it was well worth the outing, that’s for sure!
Africa Day itself is tomorrow, the 25th, but the big hoo-ha was in Iveagh Gardens today, and Limerick last week.
